In the first third of the 1600s, plague decimated the inhabitants. For this reason many dead bodies were buried in an “outer” cemetery in a large mass grave. After, this place this was called Bone Castle, later Corpse Castle. The first descriptions mentioning Corpse Castle come from 1689. In the same place in 1727 the new church was built with oak timbers on a stone foundation. This wooden church was open for services for a short time. In the meantime the Kossuth Street church was built only for funeral purposes. In the following decades the church went to ruin. Eventually, a final decision was made: the church must be demolished and a new church had to be built of wooden beams. The well-known citizen István Bató and his wife donated a significant amount of money for the continuous restoration of the church.
The structure of the building follows the tradition of Transylvanian builders; this style was revived in the XXth century by the designer and chief engineer of the city, Bálint Szeghalmy. Szeghalmy had a very close working relationship with Károly Kós, whose influence is felt strongly on the ‘Hungarian-style’ Art Nouveau church. The church built in 1938 was originally constructed with a central arrangement, reflecting the traditions of Calvinist churches. The new wooden church was consecrated in September 1938, becoming again a place of worship.
One of the most important monuments of the city that follows the local traditions, the Wooden Church, became a victim of incendiarism, but following the original plans it was rebuilt by means of a public subscription and was consecrated again on the 2nd of May 1999. The church’s internal carved patterns and the stained glass images depict ancient Hungarian and Christian symbols. The graveyard is entered through a meticulously carved Transylvanian-style gate which bears the date 1938 and the initials B. E. (for Eszter Bató).
