In the middle of Elizabeth Square you can see one of the monuments to the heroes of Tata who fell in the first world war. Actually, in Tata there are two of these world memorials because until 1938 the two major units of today’s town, Tata and Tóváros, were two separate settlements, and the residents commemorated this sad event in both places. The one you can see here is the monument to the heroes from Tóváros. The group of statues was sculpted by Béla Lajos. Originally erected on Országgyűlés tér (Parliament Square), it was only in the 1960s that the memorial was brought to this square, which bears the name of Elizabeth (nicknamed Sissi), queen of Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, and King of Hungary. In the communist era it was renamed as Szabadság tér (Freedom Square), and only after the change in the political system in 1989 did it acquire the original name again. The façades and portals of the houses built around the square are fine examples of 18th-century architecture.
This walk covers the town’s most frequently visited places, the most important natural and built treasures that give Tata its unique atmosphere.
