The Book of Numbers reads that when God punished the people with a scourge of snakes Moses was instructed by God to make a copper snake: “Make a copper snake and place it on a pole and whoever has been bitten by a snake will look upon the copper snake and live.” And so Moses made a copper snake and placed it on a pole and those who looked at it were cured.
It is common knowledge that Tokaji wine has medicinal properties, and this is why the copper snake became the central element in Tokaj’s coat-of-arms. Gyula Krúdy noted the following about King Franz Joseph:
“Our old king is healthy because he drinks a bottle of Tokaji wine every day– is what they used to say in Hungary at the time when throughout his long reign Franz Joseph was involved in every kind of legend, anecdote and fairy tale.” And it is true that there is scarcely any other wine so rich in minerals and penicillin as Tokaji, so much so that in the first half of the 20th century aszú wines were available in pharmacies and sold as medicine.
